Single family house in Boyana

Location Sofia
Year of design 2015
Year of completion 2016
Total built area 670 sq.m
Client Private

The low-energy house in the Boyana district of Sofia combines contemporary architecture with innovative energy-efficiency solutions. The aim of the project is to create a single-family residential building with very low energy consumption by using available technologies and products, without leading to limitations in the architecture or to a significant increase in construction costs.

The implementation of the project proved that this approach is suitable for wide application and can be an effective strategy for addressing the effects of climate change.

The house is located in the southern part of Sofia, at the foot of Vitosha Mountain. The private investor trusted a team of specialists from Wiereberger Bulgaria and A&A Architects for the design, project management and selection of appropriate materials and technical solutions.

The challenge in the project was to achieve a low-energy building with a contemporary design, using traditional materials: ceramic bricks and tiles, a pitched roof, and a location with cold winters.

The task was solved through an innovative combination of traditional construction solutions:

The orientation of the building was precisely determined in view of the local climatic conditions and of the opportunity for maximum solar energy gain.

The traditional pitched roof has been transformed into a visual frame that defines the contemporary silhouette of the building, as the finishing material on the roof passes over the facades.

The building envelope has a very low heat transfer coefficient to achieve high energy efficiency and reduce the energy required for heating.

Solar collectors are used to support the heating, while photovoltaic panels improve the energy balance of the house.

The integration of external louver blinds in front of the windows of the southern facade avoids overheating in the summer, and the residual energy from the solar collectors is used to heat the outdoor pool.
